Reeth and Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
Tan Hill enjoys a most remarkable location.... indeed, very unique in many ways.
Located high within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, its international claim to fame is its world-famous Tan Hill Inn, Great Britain's highest inn at 1732 feet above sea-level. From such a lofty perch, well above the tree line, there are expansive panoramic views north across the famous Stainmore Gap towards nearby Teesdale and Barnard Castle.
Indeed this quaint and friendly country inn provides an excellent base for exploration.
To the south lies beautiful Swaledale with its characteristic stone barns and hay meadows, separated by heather moorland with its vibrant purple blanket in summer. As well as the unspoilt natural beauty, there is so much to see and do. At the gateway to Swaledale stands the mighty Richmond Castle towering over the River Swale so far below. This fine market town is popular with visitors, many of whom flock to the Richmondshire Museum with its Herriot Vets' Surgery, or to the Green Howard's Regimental Museum in the cobbled market place.
Further upstream lies the pretty little village of Reeth with its enormous village green. This is a base for walkers and tourists who may choose to visit the Swaledale Museum or the furniture showrooms of Philip Bastow the Cabinet Maker, or Stefs Models/Stef Ottevanger Sculptures.
Reeth is only a short drive from the Tan Hill Inn along beautiful Arkengarthdale which, along with Reeth, was made famous in the James Herriot television series 'All Creatures Great and Small'.
Further upstream is Hazel Brow Farm Visitor Centre.... whilst at Muker is the home of Swaledale Woollens. There is also a wealth of waterfalls such as Kisdon Force and Wainwath Force.
Swaledale is also on the route to magnificent Wensleydale with a richness of attractions such as Bolton Castle, Middleham Castle, the Dales Countryside Museum, Wensleydale Creamery, Hardraw Force and Aysgarth Falls.
To the north lies beautiful Teesdale with its High Force waterfall, Barnard Castle, Raby Castle and Bowes Museum.
This has only been a flavour of what there is on offer.... and the Lake District is also a not-too-distant neighbour. The Tan Hill Inn certainly is a holiday break location to be enjoyed over and over again.
